At Deutschmann de Koning Law, we believe that being part of the Kitchener-Waterloo community means more than practising law here. It means contributing to the health, safety and well-being of the people who call our community home.

That is why we are proud to support  Lidz on Kidz, an important initiative of the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington (BIAWW) that helps children and families understand the importance of bicycle helmet safety and provides helmets to children who may otherwise go without one.

For us, this is a natural fit.

Prevention Matters

As personal injury lawyers in Kitchener, we see the consequences that serious injuries can have on individuals and families.

A brain injury can change someone's life in an instant. The physical consequences may be significant, but so can the effects on education, employment, relationships, independence and a family's future.

Prevention therefore matters.

A properly fitted bicycle helmet cannot prevent every cycling injury. But when used correctly, a helmet can help reduce the risk of serious head injury. Teaching children about bicycle safety at an early age can also help establish habits that stay with them as they grow.

That is the thinking behind Lidz on Kidz.

More Than Just Giving Away Helmets

Lidz on Kidz is about more than putting a helmet on a child's head.

The program combines education, awareness and access to safety equipment. Its goal is to help children understand why helmets matter and how to use them properly.

That educational component is particularly important.

Children need to learn that wearing a helmet is not simply something adults tell them to do. It is an important part of participating safely in activities such as cycling, scootering and other wheeled recreation.

And helmets need to fit properly.

A helmet that is too large, too small or incorrectly positioned may not provide the protection intended by its design.

Making Safety Accessible

One of the things we particularly value about Lidz on Kidz is its community focus.

Safety equipment can be expensive, particularly for families with several children who are growing rapidly and may need new helmets as they get older.

The Lidz on Kidz program helps remove that barrier by making helmets available to children and families throughout the Waterloo-Wellington region.

Recent Lidz on Kidz programs have reached communities including Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Elmira, Guelph and Mount Forest. In 2023, the program reported distributing more than 1,400 helmets to children and families in the region.

The 2026 program continues that work, with helmet events and bike rodeos planned throughout the region.

A Longstanding Commitment

Our support for Lidz on Kidz is not new.

Deutschmann de Koning Law has a longstanding relationship with BIAWW and its injury-prevention initiatives. Supporting Children Today Can Help Prevent Injuries Tomorrow

Personal injury law is, by its nature, focused on helping people after something has gone wrong.
