At Deutschmann de Koning Law, we understand how a single moment on our roads can change lives forever. The Region of Waterloo’s recent efforts to tackle collisions at a “hidden” intersection on Trussler Road in Kitchener highlight how important proactive safety measures are, especially for those who’ve been affected by injury and require legal support.
What’s Happening at the Intersection?
A segment of Trussler Road—stretching between Huron and Bleams Roads—has been marked by a troubling pattern of multi‑vehicle collisions. On May 1, 2024, a convoy involving a Hyundai, a Honda, and a transport truck resulted in two drivers being hospitalized with non life threatening injuries. Later in 2025, a similar incident led to road closures near Highway 7 / 8 and Nathalie Street after multiple vehicles and even a tow truck operator were struck, once again causing serious injuries and drawing anticipated charges.
The recurring nature of these accidents has led the Region of Waterloo to intervene, aiming to reduce collision risk through targeted engineering, enhanced enforcement, and community awareness.
What Is the Region Doing?
The Region’s Safe Roads campaign aligns with the global Vision Zero philosophy, which seeks to eliminate serious traffic injuries and fatalities. Its strategy revolves around three pillars:
Engineering: Improving sightlines, signage, and road design.
Education: Encouraging drivers to pause for an “Extra Sec Check” before proceeding().
Enforcement: Deploying speed cameras in school zones and more frequent police monitoring, particularly in hotspots like Trussler Road.
Trussler Road has been identified as a high-risk area due to limited visibility and high traffic volume. Efforts include upgrading lighting, clearing roadside obstructions, adding signage, and considering road realignment or roundabouts where appropriate. Police have increased their presence, and charges are likely following investigations of recent crashes.
Why It Matters for You
Even with improvements, accidents can still happen. For those affected—whether as drivers, passengers, cyclists, or pedestrians—the physical, emotional, and financial impacts can be overwhelming. Legal claims for compensation may involve medical treatment, income loss, rehabilitation costs, or long-term care.
