When people think about injuries resulting from a motor vehicle collision, slip and fall, or other traumatic event, they often picture broken bones, surgeries, and physical scars. However, some of the most serious injuries are invisible.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a recognized psychological injury that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. For many accident victims in Ontario, PTSD can be just as debilitating as a physical injury, affecting their ability to work, maintain relationships, and enjoy everyday life.
Common symptoms of PTSD include:
- Flashbacks and nightmares
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Difficulty sleeping
- Avoidance of places or situations that trigger memories
- Depression and emotional distress
- Difficulty concentrating
PTSD frequently develops following serious motor vehicle collisions, workplace accidents, assaults, dog attacks, and other traumatic incidents. In some cases, symptoms may not appear until weeks or months after the event.
Ontario law recognizes psychological injuries, including PTSD, as legitimate injuries that may be compensable in a personal injury claim. Victims may be entitled to compensation for treatment costs, income loss, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from their condition.
Because PTSD cannot be seen on an X-ray or MRI, documenting symptoms and obtaining appropriate medical treatment is critical. Early diagnosis and support can play an important role in recovery and in establishing the impact the injury has had on a person's life.
At Deutschmann de Koning Personal Injury and Disability Law, we understand that not all injuries are visible. If you are struggling with PTSD following an accident or traumatic event, our experienced team can help you understand your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
