Rural Road Safety in Waterloo Region: Slow Down and Share the Road

Driving through the countryside around Waterloo Region, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Woolwich and Wellesley can be relaxing but rural roads present unique safety risks that drivers need to recognize.

Unlike city streets, country roads are shared by passenger vehicles, trucks, cyclists, pedestrians, horse-and-buggy traffic and large agricultural equipment. Posted speed limits do not eliminate the risks created by blind curves, hills, narrow shoulders, hidden driveways and slow-moving vehicles.

Watch for Horse-and-Buggy Traffic

Horse-and-buggy traffic is an important consideration on rural roads, particularly in Woolwich and Wellesley Townships. A buggy may travel significantly more slowly than surrounding traffic and may need to use part of the roadway with little or no shoulder.

Drivers should slow down, leave plenty of space and avoid passing unless it is clearly safe. Passing too close can frighten a horse and lead to an unpredictable, potentially dangerous situation.

Give Farm Equipment Plenty of Room

Tractors, combines and other agricultural equipment can be extremely large and may occupy much of the roadway. They can also make unexpected turns into farm entrances or fields.

Seeing a slow-moving vehicle sign is a warning to reduce your speed and remain patient. Do not assume that you can safely pass simply because the road ahead appears clear.

Speeding Is Even More Dangerous on Rural Roads

Open roads can create a false sense of security. A driver travelling too fast may have very little time to react when encountering a tractor, buggy, cyclist, oncoming vehicle or vehicle entering the roadway from a hidden driveway.

Speeding, distracted driving, following too closely and improper passing can turn an ordinary country drive into a serious collision.

The safest approach is straightforward:

Slow down. Stay alert. Leave space. Expect the unexpected.

If you or a loved one has suffered serious injuries in a collision involving a motor vehicle, farm equipment or horse-and-buggy traffic, understanding your legal rights is important.
